Wynonna Earp is a supernatural western series that premiered on April 1, 2016 on Syfy in the United States and on CHCH TV in Canada. The series is based on the IDW comic Wynonna Earp created by Beau Smith and Canada’s Emily Andras serves as showrunner. The series follows Wynonna Earp, the great great granddaughter of Wyatt Earp. She alone can purge their town Purgatory of the evil revenants that have taken over and rid her family of the evil curse that has plagued them for decades. Armed with Wyatt Earp’s gun, Peacemaker, she must kill each of the 77 outlaws that Wyatt Earp once put down.
This is not your ordinary ‘damsel in distress’ type of series, however. Emily Andras is known for developing strong female protagonists with realistic and sharp edges. Her talent, in combination with Beau Smith’s vision, make this series unforgettable. Filmed like classic Grindhouse movies, this series is anything but predictable. Kick-ass female leads, mustachioed cowboys, Harley-Davidson “mustangs”, and sharp tongued dialogue round out an incredible and talented cast. While it certainly shares similarities to Supernatural, Justified, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Jessica Jones, Wynonna Earp is incomparable in nature from the very start.
