Just when you thought that Bobo and the rest of those rowdy group of revenants were going to be the only thorn in Wynonna’s side, Episode 3 of Wynonna Earp introduced us to the idea of a new villain. Not only is Bobo (Michael Eklund) around causing trouble, but “Leavin’ on Your Mind” talked of a mysterious Stone Witch, and Doc (Tim Rozon) isn’t the only one eager to find out who she is. Doc also revealed the truth about his identity to Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano), as he attempts to get closer and earn her trust.

Whether or not Doc can truly be trusted is still up in the air according to Emily Andras, Wynonna Earp’s showrunner. She joined us once again for another post-episode interview. Read on for all her thoughts about Doc’s intentions, why Wynonna had to learn some harsh truths and how Wynonna and Dolls’ relationship was affected by this week’s events. The TV Junkies: Wynonna has to learn a really harsh lesson at the end of this episode, that not all victories are going to necessarily feel like victories. Why was this important for her to learn so early on?

Emily Andras: I think because Wynonna is so fun and free-spirited, and part of the reason she’s been able to do what she’s done, while kind of being cavalier, is that she’s only had to take out revenants and demons that are beastly. It hasn’t really become real to her, that now she’s a lawman and she might have to do triage. She might have to decide who to save and who not to save in her community. That means recognizing that her friends and loved ones are actually in danger. There’s a price that’s going to be paid that is going to be personal for her.

I think there’s something else to be said, in that this is when Wynonna realizes there’s going to be shades of gray. Not everybody is going to be good or evil, and she’s going to have to make the call about who deserves to live and who deserves to die–and that’s a huge responsibility. She has definitely had some sort of crushing feelings on Dolls and found him interesting, and now she has to reconcile her feelings with the fact that he’s there to do a job, and that means tough choices. She can’t be a slave to her emotions, and he doesn’t seem to have emotions at all sometimes. That’s certainly set back their relationship which is interesting.

We’re also learning all the things that the revenants can maybe do. These aren’t just all “Stupid Carls” running around with guns. Now, maybe they can do possession if they work hard enough, so what else is coming down the line? It just isn’t going to be that easy, and even having the right gun doesn’t mean she can be victorious.

TTVJ: The Stone Witch seems like she’ll be playing a very big role in episodes to come. What can you share about her and why Doc is so eager to find her?

EA: I would say that whatever happened to Doc, the Stone Witch is responsible for that. The Stone Witch is really Doc Holliday’s nemesis. She’s his focus. She’s his goal and he wants to find her and punish her for whatever she did to him. No matter what it takes. She’s definitely a character that appears soon enough, and she’s delicious and unlike any other witch we’ve really seen before. She has some unique abilities and she’s her own power player. It’s good to know this is a world that seems to attract the supernatural on many levels.

TTVJ: Another big reveal this episode is that Doc comes clean to Wynonna about his true identity. Why did he decide the direct approach was the best approach, and why did you not want to drag that mystery out any longer?

EA: We personally didn’t want to drag it out because he’s listed on IMDB as Doc Holliday. You know, I think audiences today are sophisticated. One thing we really want to do on Wynonna Earp is burn through story. We move pretty fast and we promised a fast-paced action show, so that’s what we’re doing.

I think Doc’s reasons for confessing to Wynonna remain shaded however. Obviously, he’s still in debt to Bobo if he wants to get what he wants, which is the Stone Witch, but he got caught by Waverly–so you could look at it several different ways. You could argue that he felt guilty about shooting at Waverly, and he wanted to come clean to Wynonna because he felt guilty about everything that has happened to the Earp girls so far. Or you could argue that he needs to get to Wynonna before Waverly tells Wynonna that Doc shot at her so he can seem like a stand up guy, and confess to her and get her on side so he can keep her in his back pocket in case the thing with Bobo doesn’t work out.

So it really depends on how you want to see Doc Holliday. Is Wynonna being played by this so called honest confession, or is this a true indication that he has emotions and cares about her? You’ll have to stay tuned. You tell me fans what you think. You tell me if you trust him or not.

TTVJ: Of all the stuff we’re supposed to believe in the world of the show–revenants, curses, witches, etc.–I find the one thing I just can’t believe is how Waverly would be dating someone like Champ. Please explain.

EA: She’s so much better than him right? But I think you just hit upon the core of Waverly’s character, which is Wynonna was such a bad girl and left town and had such a terrible reputation, she survived through humor and did whatever it took to survive. Waverly chose the complete opposite path–she’s always been a good girl. She’s always done the right thing. She’s always done what’s expected of her. As the town sweetheart, who better to date than the good-looking town rodeo champion that she probably dated all through high school?

I don’t know if Waverly is even in touch with her emotions well enough yet to realize that she can do so much better. I would say she’s starting to figure it out, so stay tuned. Everybody has a really big journey this year, and definitely Waverly is finally going to start to consider what she wants, who she is, and worry less about being who the townspeople think she should be.

One thing I will say about Champ is that he has such incredible comic timing, that he still makes me laugh. He’s ridiculous and there’s something kind of amusing how we all know a guy like that. He’s sort of like a perverted puppy dog. But I definitely hope that Waverly will start to figure out her own value going forward. She’s a smart girl, I just don’t think she knows it yet.

TTVJ: Despite what you said about Dolls being all business, it seemed like there were some hints that maybe he and Officer Haught could develop a bit of a friendship. Is that something we can look for in coming weeks?

EA: I think so. The thing that I like about Dolls is that nobody can say that he’s anything but wildly observant. He definitely notices some things about Officer Haught that nobody else is paying attention to–namely that she has a special smile she reserves just for Waverly Earp. I think he admires people that are good at their jobs, and we’re going to find out that Officer Haught is very good at her job–even though her own boss appears not to be. He has an eye for talent, but more than that, I think he understands deep down the conflict between job and personal life. He certainly seems to be someone who has sacrificed one for another. I would say their relationship moving forward is really interesting.

TTVJ: We got some more background on The Ghost River Triangle. Bobo seems to have a plan of his own on how he’s going to escape. Can you give any insight into what that may be?

EA: The hint was dropped in Episode 2 when he said “We stick to the plan, we stick to the dig.” So it seems to be something with digging and he seems to want everybody focused on this one goal. He didn’t have a lot of time for the things that Marty, Sam and Gary were attempting with the Stone Witch. He was certainly interested, but seems to have more practical means in mind.

TTVJ: Can you preview Episode 4 for us?

EA: We’ve ended Episode 3 with this huge bombshell that Doc Holliday is in fact Doc Holliday. Episode 4 sees Doc Holliday having to prove that to Wynonna, and we find out a little of his backstory with Wyatt Earp. Wynonna also faces a revenant that is very terrifying and quite personal for her. So on top of that, it’s a very good Earp sisters story where they finally come to terms–or at least get into–some of the long standing issues they are too scared to talk about with each other.
