Even though it’s known for giving us crazy cliffhanger endings, the ending moments of this week’s Wynonna Earp episode may take the cake. Or brownies. No matter what dessert you may prefer, not many viewers probably saw what was coming in the form of Lost Girl and Dark Matter alum Zoie Palmer standing in the Homestead offering up sweet treats to Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) and the gang. Palmer’s Jolene seems to be a demon that Mama Earp (Megan Follows) has been seeing for years around Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) and what led to her being sent to prison in the first place. Yes, Waverly and Mama’s reunion was less than great and with Mama now broken out of prison, surely not the last interaction we’ll see between the pair.

There was also a ton of movement (by the trees!) this week on the Bulshar front. Jeremy (Varun Saranga) met Robin (Justin Kelly), a sweet park ranger who reported odd behavior from trees. Upon investigating further, Jeremy and Robin found a strange staircase in the middle of the woods, while Doc (Tim Rozon) ran into Bulshar who made him an appealing offer of reprieve. Will he take this season’s Big Bad up on the offer?

In order to get the answers to all our questions about Jolene, the woods and what’s ahead, we are once again joined by showrunner Emily Andras. Andras talks through all of the events in “No Cure for Crazy,” which was written by Brendon Yorke and directed by Ron Murphy.

The TV Junkies: Zoie Palmer! With brownies! Any other time I’d welcome this sight, but what the heck is going on at the Homestead? I don’t think I like Jolene.

Emily Andras: You don’t think you like her? She showed up with brownies! Oh my god you’re such a tough sell, Bridget. You’ve changed in Season 3. What is your dessert of choice? Just so I know in case I have to win you over.

TTVJ: I just prefer bread and cheese or some really good appetizers, I guess.

EA: Me too! We need a nice dip! Savory!

But that was one of the craziest scenes we’ve ever done and the other thing I really liked about it is that the cast didn’t have the next script yet. So they were like ‘how do we play this?’ I said ‘just act like Zoie Palmer is there giving you dessert treats!’ It was the most batshit crazy scene we’ve ever done and they were laughing, but as usual, the cast totally went for it.

I don’t want to oversell the Zoie Palmer this week because next week is like the Full Palmer, in all its glory. It’s such a journey and I’m excited for us. So grab a brownie, or a good app, Bridget, and get ready for more Palmer. Girl came to play and she’s not an amateaur.

One thing I feel so gratified about on Wynonna Earp now, and it’s one of the many joys of being in Season 3, is that the fans are here for it. They know we can throw them a curveball and instead of being angry about it, they are only going to be enticed. I’m really excited about next week and I think it’s just so much fun. And horrible.

TTVJ: You obviously have a history with Zoie from your Lost Girl days, but how did this guest appearance come about?

EA: Zoie is actually one of my dearest friends and I absolutely love her. She was so beloved and so great as Dr. Lauren Lewis on Lost Girl, and then got to play an actual robot as the Android on Dark Matter, but the truth about her is that she’s so freaking funny. She’s so deadpan and has such a great sense of humor. I feel like if anything, her range is underrated and I’ve been trying to find a place for her on Wynonna Earp for a long time.

Also, I’m not a complicated person and I really like working with people I already like, who I know, who have had my back, who I know will deliver and who I know will fit in on our set. Zoie is so fun and knows Tim from other things, has worked with some of the other cast members, would be fine flying to Calgary in the middle of winter and she fit in immediately. She’s also such a hard worker and her craft is so good that you know she’s going to be able to go up against the rest of the cast.

So it was really just a matter of finding her the right role and also, I was very conscious that I didn’t want her to play the same role that she did for me on Lost Girl. I thought it was time for her to play something a little more complicated, a little more nefarious and a little more mysterious. Hence, Jolene! We were absolutely delighted when she said ‘yes’ and there really was no one else for the role.

TTVJ: Waverly finally knows the truth and we got a lot of backstory about how Mama ended up in prison this week. Last week we saw Kate turn over the Angel card, but now this week Mama keeps seeing a demon around Waverly. Are these all hints as to what she may be?

EA: Well they are… But I want to go back to the first thing you said, which is that we finally know the truth about Mama. The thing I would say about that is that she’s been in asylum for 15 years at least and is an unreliable storyteller. So we don’t totally know yet what Mama’s deal is. Yes, she certainly seems to think that one thing is happening, but is that thing happening? If I was Wynonna and knew Mama’s history, and the damage that she’s done to Waverly and myself, how would I make peace with that? Who do I believe? Even when you’re a demon hunter, mental illness still exists. I’d say we’re getting some hints about Waverly, but not answers, yet. So stay tuned!

TTVJ: Mama Earp took her chance to break out of prison, but I think the most impressive exit was Wynonna’s. All of her hardcore training was worth it in that awesome fight she had with the prison guard. What was it like for Melanie to shoot that sequence?

EA: One of my favorite things, and Mel often talks about this, is that when Wynonna first picks up Peacemaker in Season 1 she’s not very good at it. She can’t shoot straight. I said to Mel when she was nervous, that I actually think it’s more interesting that this woman hasn’t been trained to be a superhero and now is expected to be one. That felt more vulnerable and more real and a more interesting story to tell. Now in Season 3, I love seeing the confidence. Wynonna isn’t pregnant anymore and yes, this guy is a revenant dick, but she’s seen it all before. She knows now, even in dire circumstances, that she has a fighting chance. I just love that confidence, the comedy and the choreography. As always, I think it was a challenge for Mel, but I also think she’s more game every single year as she gains confidence in her abilities, which she should because she’s awesome!

TTVJ: We got a lot of movement on the Bulshar front in this episode and started to learn what he may be up to with the trees. Doesn’t our gang listen to My Favorite Murder and know to stay out of the forest?

EA: Stay sexy and don’t get murdered! Well, they are sexy and haven’t gotten murdered so they took one note. It’s difficult because yes, they should stay out of the forest, but at the same time they really need to get this guy. He’s responsible for Dolls’ death and cursed the Earps in the first place. They need to go where the bad guy is and he’s in the trees, Bridge. The trees that seem to be moving. What the hell?

TTVJ: What the hell indeed! Then Doc runs into Bulshar in the forest.

EA: How did that go?

TTVJ: It made me very nervous! He presents Doc with this big offer of reprieve, and we know Doc has been struggling since he went to Hell. Is there any chance he takes him up on it?

EA: You know what? There’s a chance for sure. Look, there’s a time jump where we’re not privy what Doc has said to Bulshar or what happened. Doc seemed confused, but at the same time he doesn’t tell Jeremy that he saw Bulshar and that is worrying. It’s going to be a tough year for Doc, but at the same time he’s found meaning with Wynonna and this family. He’s been to Hell and lost his immortality so it’s going to be tempting, right? 50/50 chance, Bridge?

TTVJ: We also met Robin and he and Jeremy are pretty adorable together. Will we be seeing more of him and that relationship, even though things didn’t look promising given that he was getting dragged off by the vine at the end of the episode?

EA: Yea, he was getting dragged off by the forest, Bridget. Do you think that’s a good sign? Generally not super best end to a date, just so people know. I’m not on Grindr or Tinder but my impression is that that’s a bummer. That’s a C minus. I don’t want to say though.

TTVJ: Well, before that happened I really enjoyed that cute scene with Waverly and Jeremy where she’s trying to set him up.

EA: I do like that he’s kind of science and she knows all the history of the Earp curse, of the town and the revenants. They really compliment each other and I really like that too.

TTVJ: Not only do we have whatever is happening to the trees going on in the forest, but Nicole went and threw Bulshar’s ring all willy nilly. She’s usually so practical, so what was she thinking by doing that?

EA: She is usually so practical! It was just a compulsion because the ring repulses her so much, right? It wasn’t the most practical thing to do but in the moment it seemed to be the only thing she could do. It probably won’t show up again. It’s probably gone forever, Bridget. It’s probably not going to show up.

But also, yes, it was a very un-Haught thing to do. I don’t want her to be practical and perfect all the time. I don’t buy that any person is like that. I want her to be three-dimensional and make a mistake or go with her gut. We’ve already heard last week that Waverly feels like destiny has a plan for this entire group, including Nicole, and that it maybe potentially wasn’t even coincidence that she ended up as a cop in the Ghost River Triangle. She threw away the ring, but you have to trust her because she has red hair! Surely she made the right decision.

TTVJ: Another thing I found interesting is that we’re still seeing implications from Dolls’ death and the team has to deal with budget cuts and how to get supplies. Are we going to keep seeing these headaches ahead for Nedley to deal with?

EA: Look, talking about money isn’t always that sexy, but one of the things I like about the show is that these guys are not Mission: Impossible. They are not funded and kind of dipshits with no care for money and no budget. Now that Black Badge is gone, what are the realities of that? I think it’s good to keep them underdogs, but it’s especially frustrating that now in Season 3 we know just what the stakes are. This is the worst time to be confronted with something as mundane as money problems.

TTVJ: You already discussed this a bit, but what can we expect in next week’s episode?

EA: Next week is the episode you’ve all been waiting for. It’s called “Jolene” after the best Dolly Parton song, née country song, possibly of all time. It features Zoie Palmer giving the most tour de force performance. It’s so much fun and features more Mama Earp, more Earp sisters antics, more insight into Waverly’s backstory and one mother of a bar brawl.
