#FightForWynonna: The Story So Far

  • The problem

    • Despite SYFY being ready to go for two more seasons, there’s been a delay in production of Season 4 due to financial issues with IDW, the company that functions as the studio that makes the series.
    • The fate of the series as a whole on screen is now in jeopardy.
  • The #FightForWynonna

    • In response, Wynonna Earp fans (Earpers) have used the power of social media to tweet, email, send Facebook messages and call IDW in hopes of proving just how much support is out there for the show.
    • In addition to the social media push, to date 80+ #FightForWynonna billboard ads have been taken out in support of the show in Times Square, including ones from showrunner Emily Andras, stars Melanie Scrofano and Tim Rozon.
    • A new billboard in LA has also been commissioned in support of #FightForWynonna that will remain for 3 weeks.
  • The goal

    • Wynonna Earp fans just want the show back on their screen and to get Season 4 as was promised by IDW.
    • Emily Andras, this cast, these writers and crew deserve to tell the story on screen.

For those who want even MORE details, here’s the full story on the #FightForWynonna…

If you’re a fan of Wynonna Earp, then you’re probably expecting to tune in this summer for Season 4. However, all of the sudden, it seems that the fate of Season 4 altogether is up in the air. Production on the supernatural western has been delayed because of financial issues at IDW. So while SYFY and Space Channel have committed to not only 12 episodes in Season 4, but also a 12 episode Season 5, filming can’t seem to get started. What gives?

Here’s what we know so far: On Thursday, February 21 signs of trouble first showed themselves to Earpers, who had been starting to wonder why their beloved show was not back in production already. Star Melanie Scrofano even responded to a fan’s tweet that all she knew was that they weren’t filming Season 4 right now and didn’t know why. Earpers then did what Earpers do and took to social media. They trended worldwide that night in showing their love and support for the show, despite not knowing what was truly going on yet with its future. Thus, the #FightForWynonna was born.

Some clarity on the situation came on Friday, February 22 when Mo Ryan reported that financial issues at IDW were the cause for delay on production of Season 4. In Ryan’s article, Andras said “Wynonna Earp means the world to so many of us — crew and cast and fans alike. And the story’s not over.” Meanwhile, IDW responded with their own statement saying, ““IDW is committed to continuing to tell the Wynonna Earp story. Much like the fans, we are passionate about not only the series, but the comics, the characters and the overall message that the Wynonna Earp franchise carries. We are in the process of working out the details for how the Wynonna story will continue and will share new details very soon.”

After getting this insight into the situation, a course of action was born and Earpers worldwide sprang into action to fight for the show they love and make it known how much seeing it back on screen means to them. A game plan of polite #NoChill tweeting, Facebook messages, emailing and calling aimed at IDW began in hopes of proving just how much support is out there for Wynonna Earp, how much it means to this fandom and how far we’re willing to go to support it.

A week after the #FightForWynonna began, Earpers took a step further to prove their love for the show to IDW, as they started taking over Times Square in New York City. @Lorenzos_world bought the first billboard in Times Square on February 28, 2019 as a 30-second message appeared in support of Wynonna Earp, the #FightForWynonna and aimed at IDW. Since then, Earpers have continued to show their support in Times Square on subsequent nights, with one night actually having 18 billboard messages for the #FightForWynonna. At the time this is being written, there have been 49 billboards to date in support of the show, leading some to dub it Earp Square.

Scrofano and Andras also got in on the action and bought a billboard time slot one night thanking fans, and telling them to “Fight Like an Earper.” The next night Tim Rozon joined the fun and bought one as well. It’s all working too because the press has started to take notice. Articles about the #FightForWynonna and these billboards have appeared in various publications:

The Wynonna Earp fandom’s polite #NoChill didn’t stop there though, as the #FightForWynonna made its way to the West Coast. There, thanks to the very generous Elsa (@wapoose7), an actual #FightForWynonna billboard has been set up for 3 weeks in LA. Kat Barrell and Varun Saranga recently went out and took a look at it for themselves:

All of this love and support being shown by Earpers is fantastic, but the question soon becomes “what’s next?” Other than the statement made on February 22, IDW has remained silent on the issue so fans have had very little feedback to go on. One thing we want to reiterate, that is very important for all fans to keep in mind, is that this #FightForWynonna is a marathon and not a sprint. That means that Earpers need to stay to course and keep the noise level high. We need to keep tweeting @IDWPublishing and @SYFY, keep writing on IDW’s Facebook page, keep emailing IDW and calling on the phones. We also need to keep asking Netflix to bring Season 3 and beyond to their platform.

For more details on the actions Earpers can take to help show support for the #FightForWynonna please review our action plan and stay tuned as we often provide updates at that page. We are continuously looking for ways to involve everyone in the fandom and make the biggest impacts we can. The billboards have been an AMAZING step in this #FightForWynonna, but we want to stress again that Earpers should not feel as though they need to spend money to make a difference. Each and every one of us matter in this fight and it’s going to take all of us working together to make this happen.

Keep reminding yourselves that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Polite #NoChill your hearts out and be as loud and proud about your love for Wynonna Earp as you can. We’ve been through these fights before, but we need everyone working together now like never before. We want anyone who wonders about our passion to know loud and clear that when it comes to the #FightForWynonna, Earpers are always ALL IN!
