After weeks of anticipation, fans of the brewing relationship between Waverly Earp (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) and Officer Nicole Haught (Katherine Barrell) on Wynonna Earp finally got their wishes granted this week. In a somewhat surprising turn of events, Waverly was the one to take charge and make her move on Officer Haught, deciding once and for all to give into her feelings for the police officer. The two now seem poised to start a relationship, but in a town like Purgatory there’s always danger lurking around every corner.
The TV Junkies recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Provost-Chalkley and Barrell to discuss Waverly’s bold move and look ahead at where the “WayHaught” relationship may be headed. The actresses also gave us some more insight on their characters, including what happens now that Bobo Del Rey (Michael Eklund) has bought Shorty’s.
The TV Junkies: Were you surprised that Waverly finally made up her mind and made a move on Officer Haught, especially in the manner that she did?
Dominique Provost-Chalkley: I loved it! The moment I read it I thought it was ingenious because it’s unexpected and not how you’d envision it to come about. I thought it was a fantastic decision on the writers’ part. So many things are changing around Waverly and I can totally relate to that in life. When you’re growing up and you think your life is going to turn out a certain way, and things are going in one direction, but these curve balls come in. It shakes you up and you need to work out how you’re going to fit into all that.
So this isn’t just about Nicole, it’s about the fact that everything is changing and she doesn’t know how to cope with it. That’s the catalyst to her then going ‘you know what? I’m just going to go for it, and it might be the worst decision I’ve ever made in my life, and I’m terrified and excited.’ There’s so many different emotions going on that bring her to this point of just snogging her face off. [laughs]
Katherine Barrell: What I think is brilliant about it too is that it has to be Waverly’s decision. Nicole’s in a place where she’s like ‘You know it’s pretty obvious how I feel about you.’ So my favorite part is that scene in the car where they have a bit of a tiff and Waverly says ‘You’re not my girlfriend,’ and Nicole says ‘I know I’d never expect you to be someone you’re not.’ For me that was such a pivotal moment for those two characters because Nicole is putting the power in Waverly’s hands saying ‘I’m never going to force you to do something you don’t want to do. I care about you regardless if you want to date me or not.’
DPC: But I do! But I do! [laughs]
KB: [laughs] It shows the doubt too. It’s a scary thing telling someone you like them and taking that leap with them. I think it was a perfect first kiss for them and I love it. It’s so beautifully executed and the dialog is so beautiful. It’s very real that Waverly gets all frazzled, giddy and unsure of herself and Nicole just lets her go. I think that’s one of the greatest things about Nicole is that she doesn’t push. She knows that things happen in their own time and she’s not going to force anyone to do something that they aren’t comfortable with because ultimately that’s just going to push Waverly away. It’s very smart. Nicole has really good game I have to say. She really gets other people and she knows how to let people move at their own pace and not scare them off.
TTVJ: We know you can’t given away a lot of spoilers, but what can you tell us about the future of WayHaught and their relationship moving forward?
KB: We can reiterate that no one in Purgatory is safe from heartbreak or physical pain. The world that these characters are dealing with is an extremely dangerous place and will continue to be so for them. Nobody is safe on the show.
TTVJ: We don’t know a whole lot about Haught given she’s new in town. Will we learn any more about her backstory?
KB: Because the show has so much going on right now and the fact that we’re building to a big climactic last few episodes, there’s not a lot of down time. We’re moving really fast from here on out. You get little glimmers of her backstory with how she deals with things, but we don’t really delve too much into her past.
TTVJ: Waverly and Bobo have a very interesting relationship and in a lot of ways he has more respect for her than anyone else on the show. Why do those two seem to have this strong connection and how will it come into play moving forward this season, especially now that he’s bought Shorty’s?
DPC: I will say that personally it’s one of my favorite dynamics in the show. There are certainly some moments coming up that are something to look out for. It gets very exciting. That’s all I will say.
TTVJ: What’s it like playing those scenes with Michael?
DPC: Michael Eklund is a phenomenal actor. His way of working is really inspiring. I found I worked really well with him and we created some really cool stuff. Our characters in many ways are very different but have similarities as well. We really connected as people and hopefully you’ll be able to see that in upcoming questions.
TTVJ: Is there anything else you’d like to add?
KB: To the fans just keep engaging on social media with #WynonnaEarp. Keep talking about the show and spreading the word because the fan reaction absolutely makes a difference to the future of the show. We see all the messages and love to hear from them. Keep engaging with us and sharing because we greatly appreciate it.
